Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series: Trimmed 8-CU GPU Targets Mid-Tier Flagship Segment

Qualcomm expands its Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 (8E5) chip lineup with the all-new V Series variant, model designation SM8850-1-AB, marking the fourth derivative following the standard, high-clock and 7-core editions. Positioned as a value-focused mid-range flagship silicon, this chipset is engineered for handsets in the $410–$550 price bracket and expected to become the standard processor for brand sub-line flagships launching in the second half of the year.

The CPU subsystem carries over the identical 8-core Oryon layout with 2 Prime large cores clocked up to 4.6GHz paired with six performance cores peaking at 3.62GHz, retaining full multi-thread performance parity with the base 8E5 model.

The primary hardware cutback lands on the graphics unit: its Adreno 840 GPU shrinks from 12 Compute Units down to 8 CU, locked at a 1.2GHz operating frequency. Even with fewer execution units, it keeps 12MB dedicated HPM high-speed graphics memory, alongside full compatibility with hardware ray tracing, Unreal Engine 5 optimizations, the complete suite of Snapdragon gaming technologies and mainstream graphics APIs.

On-device AI performance is jointly powered by the Adreno GPU and Hexagon NPU via fused accelerator architecture, enabling mixed multi-precision computation and built-in encryption safeguards for generative AI workloads. Its integrated Sensing Hub houses dual micro NPUs and dual ISPs to process voice commands and sensor streams at ultra-low power draw.

For wireless connectivity, the chip integrates the X85 5G modem compliant with 5G Advanced standards, delivering a peak downlink throughput of 12.5Gbps. Matched with the FastConnect 7900 connectivity system, it supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0 LE Audio and UWB ultra-wideband protocols.

The imaging pipeline deploys three 20-bit AI ISPs, capable of single-camera shots up to 320MP and zero-lag triple-camera captures at 32MP, plus native 8K HDR video recording. Display support tops out at 4K+ 120Hz or QHD+ 240Hz panels, with full Dolby Vision and HDR10+ certification.

Flagship-grade peripheral specifications remain untouched: the platform supports a maximum of 24GB LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.1 flash storage, paired with Snapdragon lossless spatial audio, QC5 fast charging, hardware security engines, virtualization frameworks and C2PA content authentication.

With CPU, cache and all auxiliary flagship subsystems unmodified and only GPU scale reduced, real-world benchmark scores sit extremely close to the full-fat standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, making this V Series a cost-efficient flagship alternative for smartphone OEMs.
